Today we mark the 82nd anniversary of the salvation of 50 000 Bulgarian Jews and we honour the memory of 11 343 Jews from Aegean Thrace, Vardar Macedonia and the city of Pirot, who perished in the Nazi death camps during the years of the Holocaust.
This historical moment of which Bulgaria can indeed be proud came about thanks to the humanity and strength of unity of the Bulgarian nation, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Institutions, Bulgarian politicians and public figures.
Key figures in the salvation of the Jews in Bulgaria were Dimitar Peshev, Member of Parliament, Sofia Bishop Stefan I of Bulgaria, Plovdiv Bishop Kiril, and many other known and unknown worthy Bulgarian citizens - both Christian and Muslim. We bow to their courage and worthy example.
We Remember!
